Research Interests
I am interested in social network theory and rational choice sociology, and particularly in investigating the interface of the two. I have studied how social networks influence the recruitment into and the diffusion of social movement organizations. Nowadays, I am studying the influence of social networks on welfare outcomes. In the new studies, I use the new network-component of Swedish Level of Living Survey. The effects of differing network structures on labor market success, political participation, and access to informal support are to be investigated. I will focus on gender differences in network structures and assess whether structural differences in social network can help understand gender differences in welfare outcomes. I have previously studied gender differences between women and men with regard to career outcomes, using the work life biographies of the Level of Living Survey (download Women's employment in Sweden.pdf below).
I have also an interest in organizational sociology and have studied the ecology of labor unions, as well as the dynamics of organizational competition. At present I am also involved in two projects about policy views of academics. One is based on data about American social scientists (Go to survey home page). The American study was conducted in 2003. I collaborate with Daniel Klein in the project. The other study is based on data about Swedish social scientists. The survey can be found below (in Swedish: Policystudy.pdf, in English: The Policy Study English.pdf). The data collection phase was finished in the end of January 2006.
